SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 33

Bailey, Chafin, Jackson, Wooton, Bowman and Tomblin, Mr.
President)
Recognizing the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of
golf legend Sam Snead.
Whereas, During his high school years, Sam Snead excelled in
all sports. High school records set by him in basketball, football
and baseball have not yet been broken to date. He was an All- American in football and was offered scholarships to various
colleges. As a result of a football injury, he was advised by his
coach to concentrate on golf and he quickly excelled at that sport;
and
Whereas, After graduating from high school, Sam Snead turned
professional in 1934 and joined the PGA Tour in 1937. At the age
of twenty-four, he won his first victory at a West Virginia PGA
event. He has since gone on to win one hundred eighty-four
tournaments around the world, including one hundred forty wins on
the American Tour. His most recent victory in 1983 was when he won
the renowned Legends of Golf Tournament at the age of seventy; and
Whereas, During his outstanding career, Sam Snead has won seven major championships, three Masters, three PGA championships
and one British Open. He has represented his country on nine Ryder
Cups and three Canada Cup teams, winning the individual title in
1961 at the age of fifty. He has finished in first place one
hundred eighty-four times, second place sixty-three times and third
place fifty-four times. He has finished in the top ten three
hundred fifty-eight times and the top twenty-five four hundred
seventy-three times; and
Whereas, Over the years, Sam Snead has set over one hundred
course records and has made thirty-five holes-in-one; and
Whereas, Sam Snead, known as a golf legend, would have been
famous anyway for his down-to-earth manner, his simplistic logic in
approaching life and especially his concern for his fellow man; and
Whereas, Sam Snead has been recognized throughout the world as
a premier touring pro and his association with The Greenbrier
resort has contributed greatly to the positive image that West
Virginia enjoys in the world of golf; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby recognizes the outstanding
accomplishments of Sam Snead, a golf pro who has made his mark on
history and has left his impression on the world; and, be it
Further Resolved, That Sam Snead should be recognized for his
many humanitarian contributions to society through his active
participation in a myriad of community activities, not only in West Virginia, but throughout the world; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to Sam Snead.
